Produced water treatment for the major offshore oil and gas development in Northern Caspian

Water recycling in large scale: Pörner Ingenieurgesellschaft increases the capacity of the water treatment plant for Kashagan oil field in the north of Caspian Sea (Kazakhstan) and has successfully completed a 2-year long project. The plant removes residual oil from the highly saline produced water in order to allow further disposal within key environmental limits.

Prefabricated produced water treatment plant for application at Bolashak OPF / Kazakhstan

Austria / Kazakhstan. Pörner Ingenieurgesellschaft, successfully completed the project for the expansion of the produced water treatment plant for Kashagan oil field in Kazakhstan. The end customer is North Caspian Operating Company N.V. (NCOC). NCOC operates the giant Kashagan oil field discovered in 2002 and ranked as one of the world’s largest oil discoveries of the past four decades with approximately 9-13 billion barrels (1-2 billion tonnes) of recoverable oil. The Kashagan reservoir lies 80km offshore from the city of Atyrau in 3-4 meters of water, and is more than 4 km deep (4,200 meters). The Bolashak Onshore Processing Facility (OPF) is located near Atyrau, where oil and gas from the offshore Kashagan field is processed. The general conditions of the project were very demanding, as weather conditions in the region vary from -35° to +35° C and the associated oil gas contains up to 15 % hydrogen sulfide.

For the specialists of the competence center “Pörner Water”, the project included the complete engineering and design as well as planning and manufacturing supervision of the process units. After successful factory acceptance by the customer, the largely pre-assembled plant components were exported and supplied to Kazakhstan. Back in 2016, the water technology team was responsible for providing a functional system with a treatment capacity of 164 m³/h for first two oil trains, which went live in 2020. Now the third oil train system with treatment capacity of 82 m3/h has been provided with an additional functionality improvement which is
planned to be installed in a coming years.

The scope of work for “Pörner Water” included:

  • Project management
  • Basic and detail engineering incl. process design and planning of aggregates, I&C equipment as well as piping
  • Procurement and delivery of individual components
  • Construction supervision
  • Documentation for the export to Kazakhstan

The Pörner Water team that has been employed by Siemens before the acquisition was integrated into the Pörner Group under the management of Dr. Robert Vranitzky in March 2020.

Sustainability with water treatment at Pörner

The competence center “Pörner Water” complements the Pörner range of services with industrial water treatment and comprehensive knowledge about water as a resource. The portfolio ranges from water treatment plants for deoiling of produced water in oil production to the treatment of process water in the refinery sector. Besides customers in oil and gas, Pörner’s water technology also offers their services to the chemical and pharmaceutical industry providing tailored solutions to sustainably minimize energy and water consumption and thus plant emissions. Customers benefit from holistic project management: from the concept study to the realization of overall projects – and beyond to predictive maintenance and servicing.
