Innovative Isobutene plant put in operation at Burghausen Refinery

EDL from Leipzig implements complex EPCm project for OMV. Planning and construction of the innovative ISO C4 unit at the Burghausen Refinery have passed the last milestone with the successful and, above all, safe commissioning. Direct production of high-purity isobutene runs at full speed now.

Project manager Daniel Mohr is happy about the success of this project

The new ISO C4 plant of OMV Germany was successfully put into operation at the end of 2020. Since then, isobutene with a purity of 99.9% has been produced at the Burghausen site. The plant is based on a new technology that was jointly developed by OMV and BASF. This demanding EPCm project was executed by the Pörner Group under the direction of EDL.

The integration of the new unit into an existing plant makes a decisive contribution to energy efficiency, since 80% of the heat demand of the new process is covered by waste heat from existing facilities. Thus, 20,000 metric tons of CO2 emissions can be avoided per year.

EDL’s project manager, Daniel Mohr, feels happy about the successful cooperation between OMV and the Pörner / EDL locations involved in this project: „Despite the pandemic and increased hygiene and safety measures, the project was successfully implemented and handed over to the production at the Burghausen Refinery.“

Thomas Rieger, OMV’s Project Manager, states: „The project team did an excellent job. The first product deliveries have already been completed and they have fully met the expectations of all parties involved.”

Yet again, EDL and the Pörner Group delivered proof of being a reliable partner when it comes to converting innovative ideas into functioning plants.
